The FAO-UN is working on food safety in Bangladesh and one of their celebrations of Global Hand Washing day 2013 was assigned to the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) alumni association this year. Since October 15, the Global Hand-Washing day, falls during the holidays for religious festivals, it was observed fairly ahead of time. On October 6 & 7, YES alumni Bangladesh members covered nine different schools by observing part of the days with little children.
The target audience of the event were students of grades 3 to 5. Preparing material for this category students was a tough task. However, there were half an hour long sessions conducted by the alumni groups. These sessions included interactive ways of creating awareness of hand washing techniques. Powerpoint presentations, images, short video clips and short speeches were the tools used during each session. All the students from each of the schools were very much attentive and cooperated the presenters accordingly. Students were asked different questions in order to check their knowledge about hygiene. A significant number of students had ideas about the necessity of washing hands. Students were confident enough to come forward and speak in front the crowd about their ways of washing hands.
Powerpoint presentation was basically used for creating understanding of dangers of not washing hands properly and also the positives of keeping hands clean. After learning the proper techniques of washing hands, students took pledge that they will always wash their hands properly. A total number of 900(approx.) students were reached in two days.
